ROTEM

Ommersteyn castle from the 13th century to the 18th century. The name Rotem?
‘Rotem’ means ‘cleared place’ or ‘mining’.

DILSEN

Ter Motten castle, founded in 1725, currently serves as the administrative centre of Dilsen-Stokkem. The name Dilsen? ‘Dilsen’ comes from ‘Thilesna’, probably the Celtic name for ‘river’.

ELEN

Sipernau castle, founded in the 18th century. The name Elen? ‘Elen’, also spelled ‘Hellini’ at the time, may be derived from ‘Halina’, meaning hard ground.

STOKKEM

Carolinaberg castle, founded in 1878. The name Stokkem? ‘Stokkem’ or ‘Stockheim’ means house by the woody crops.
